The Rosary consists of fifteen decades. Each decade is recited in prayer to honor one of the mysteries of the life of Jesus and his mother the Virgin Mary. Each decade begins with the Annunciation of the Incarnation, and ends with Mary's triumphal coronation in heaven.
A rosary decade consists of:
One Our Father
Ten Hail Marys
One Glory Be to the Father
In addition to the standard decade, Our Lady of Fatima instructed the Fatima children to also add the Decade Prayer after each decade of the rosary that they pray on their rosary beads.
Standard rosary beads consist of five decades. One typically prays the rosary by reciting five decades at a time with prayerful medication on one set of mysteries.
When you recite the Glory Be after the last decade of your rosary prayer, you conclude praying the rosary by making the sign of the cross.
Catholics customarily append the Hail, Holy Queen prayer to close their devotional rosary prayer.
There are special days of the week when we pray the rosary in honor of particular mysteries. The joyful mysteries are contemplated on Mondays and Thursdays; on Fridays and Tuesdays we pray the sorrowful mysteries; and on Saturday and Wednesday the glorious mysteries are prayed.
In addition each of the mysteries are prayed on Sunday depending on the season. During the period between Advent and Lent, we pray the joyful mysteries; the sorrowful mysteries are prayed during Lent; and starting on Easter and continuing until Advent, we pray the glorious mysteries.
